Going Above and Beyond: A Labor of Love for Memory Support

At RiverWoods Manchester, dedication runs deeper than job descriptions. The recent efforts of our Facility Services team are a shining example of that commitment in action.

Earlier this month, a group of team members from Environmental Services came together on their own time and with their own resources to enhance the outdoor garden space in our Memory Support neighborhood. Since this project fell outside the scope of contracted landscaping services, it was a true grassroots effort, motivated by compassion and pride in their community.

Led by Director of Environmental Services Brian Murdock, the team dedicated over four hours to transform the outdoor garden space in the Memory Support neighborhood into a more vibrant and welcoming environment for residents to enjoy. Brian expressed pride in the outcome and gratitude for the opportunity to care for the RiverWoods Manchester community, emphasizing how much the residents mean to the team.

This act of generosity was more than just a gardening project. It reflected the values that define RiverWoods Manchester: knowing our residents personally, caring deeply, and striving to enhance their daily experience. Neighbor and resident Elaine shares, “My apartment looks down on the Memory Care garden and patio, and I was delighted to see the Facilities staff working to make the area tidy and beautiful.  They did so much raking, wheel-barrowing, shoveling, planting, watering, and mulching, all on a hot day.  Many residents will enjoy the product of this labor.”

The timing of this thoughtful effort is significant. June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and support for individuals living with memory loss. For residents in Memory Support, calming outdoor spaces can offer therapeutic benefits and provide a sense of peace and familiarity.

With colorful flowers blooming and inviting seating areas tucked into the shade, the refreshed garden now offers a peaceful retreat, perfect for reflection or simply enjoying the fresh air.

We are incredibly grateful to Brian and his team for going the extra mile. Their thoughtfulness and initiative are a beautiful reminder that community isn’t just about where you live. It’s about how you care.
