At RiverWoods Durham, Earth Week isn’t just a celebration—it’s a movement. In April 2025, this SSAFE Accredited Community came together for a week-long series of events reflecting our shared commitment to protecting the planet, supporting sustainability, and living purposefully.
The week began with an ongoing art exhibit, a weeklong swap shop (including a prescription container collection), and a library display designed to spark inspiration, conversation, and action around environmental awareness. From repurposed art to earth-friendly reads, residents explored sustainability through creativity and knowledge.

- Spring Trail Clean-Up
With gloves on and trash bags in hand, community members tackled invasive species and litter spread woodchips along the RiverWoods Durham trails, restoring and preserving the natural beauty of our grounds. - Sustainability Expo
The Tremont Room buzzed with energy as the Sustainability Expo brought together local organizations and green innovators:- Replenish Refillery offered eco-friendly home goods
- Good Planet Apparel showcased sustainable clothing
- Durham’s Integrated Waste Management Committee, Dover Plastic Reduction, and others provided educational resources
- Interactive exhibits like Trash Talk, SSAFE, and Sustainable Eating empowered residents to take everyday actions that make a lasting difference
- Compelling Guest Speakers
- Duncan Watson shared insights on award-winning waste management strategies
- Nicole Cardwell explored the importance of a local, resilient food system in “NH Food System 101.”
- Thought-Provoking Films
Residents enjoyed screenings of Wings of Life and Common Ground, sparking dialogue around biodiversity, conservation, and regenerative agriculture. - Community Celebration
Earth Week culminated in a spirited celebration for residents and staff, blending environmental care with community health.
