Healthy Aging in Action: Balance Bootcamp at RiverWoods Durham

September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to highlight habits, programs, and resources that support older adults in living active and vibrant lives. At RiverWoods Durham, one way we put that philosophy into practice is through our Balance Bootcamp: a six-month program designed to reduce fall risk and improve mobility through strength training and balance activities.

From January through July 2025, our latest Balance Bootcamp cohort took on the challenge, which was designed by the RiverWoods Durham fitness team. Residents who participated committed to attending at least 80% of the sessions.

Impressive Results

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, accounting for more than 3 million emergency department visits annually. According to the CDC, one in four Americans age 65 and older falls each year.  Beyond the physical injuries, falls can also have an impact on confidence, mobility, and lifestyle.

While falls are common, they are also preventable, which is why proactive programs like Balance Bootcamp are so important. Along the way, residents completed assessments at the start, midpoint, and conclusion of the program, focusing on key indicators of balance and overall health: gait speed, timed up and go, 5-time chair stand, and grip strength. The numbers tell an inspiring story:

  • Gait Speed: ~7% improvement

  • Timed Up and Go: ~7% improvement

  • 5-Time Chair Stand: 17% improvement

  • Grip Strength: ~8% improvement

Even more encouraging, participants reported a full-point increase in their self-rated balance confidence on a 1–5 scale – proof that the program boosted not just physical strength but also peace of mind.

Expanding the Program

Inspired by these results, RiverWoods launched a new session this August with 23 residents, split into two groups. We’ve also expanded the program to include monthly nutrition talks led by a Registered Dietician as well as workshops on topics including posture and rising from the floor strategies.
