Service with Heart, Tiny Hands and a Marathon Pace
Our mission is brought to life by the people who serve with compassion, purpose and – sometimes – tiny hands. Our next Humans of RiverWoods is Jenn Merriam, Director of Social Services.
Jenn’s journey in senior living has always been rooted in genuine, wholehearted service. “I work in service to the residents,” she says, and everything about her approach reflects that. Whether she’s welcoming new residents, supporting families through challenging transitions, or mentoring the next generation of professionals, Jenn leads with empathy, integrity, and a touch of humor.
A passionate advocate for education and growth, Jenn partners with the University of New Hampshire to host interns each year—offering students hands-on experience in the field of gerontology and social work or psychology. She’s deeply committed to expanding this internship program, sharing that the insight and energy these students bring continually renew her own perspective. “Our residents and RiverWoods’ core values inspire me every day,” she says. “It’s a privilege to learn from them.”
Jenn also facilitates two meaningful groups at RiverWoods Durham: a monthly Grief Support Group and a Death Café—a safe, thoughtful space where people gather to explore one of life’s most universal, yet rarely discussed, topics. Jenn is proud of the Caregiver Support Group that she started within the first two months of opening and another Social Worker is continuing the group. With wisdom and warmth, Jenn guides participants in meaningful conversation, reflection, and connection.
When she needs time to process a decision or reflect on a challenge, Jenn has a signature line: “Let me go for a run and get back to you.” An avid runner, she often finds clarity in setting a pace and returning with a renewed sense of focus. And if you’ve ever spotted a pair of tiny plastic hands on her fingers or in her pocket; yes, that’s Jenn, too.
We’re grateful for the leadership, mentorship, and humor Jenn brings to RiverWoods Durham, and we can’t wait to see how she continues to grow and shape the future of our community.
