What is Person-Centered Memory Care?

Many people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia can live on their own during the early stages if they have at-home support. However, as memory issues progress, there could be a time when a little extra support is needed to help your parent or loved one continue to live safely.

Memory changes in a parent or loved one can be challenging and vary from person to person. That’s why The RiverWoods Group offers person-centered memory care across our three communities: Manchester, Exeter, and Durham.

At RiverWoods, our person-centered memory care program is designed to meet each individual’s needs, making their care plan specific to them. This allows us to ensure we provide the highest level of privacy, dignity, and independence for each resident.

In this blog, we’ll review our approach, what makes The RiverWoods Group unique, and how families can benefit from memory support services.

What is Memory Support?

Memory care, or memory support, is a form of long-term care that provides intensive and specialized support for individuals with memory issues. Typically, this consists of older adults living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, according to AARP

Memory care services are usually designed to provide 24-hour support for older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia. This provides a safe, structured environment that helps lower stress for these individuals.

At RiverWoods, we offer person-centered memory care, which prioritizes the person over the diagnosis. Person-centered memory care involves specially designed programming to stimulate and enhance cognitive function for residents who require memory support.

While traditional memory care is task-focused, our person-focused approach enhances quality of life and emotional well-being by tailoring support to each resident’s preferences. Activities can include music therapy, art, gardening, interactive programs, and off-site trips.
